One relatively unique feature was the installation of the EmpirBus electrical management system configured via my laptop. Whilst I could consider this a bit of an extravagance, it was worthwhile being able to configure any electrical component in any which way I desired. For example, if I wish to arm the alarm system, I can configure the system to shut off all the lights and leave the headlight on for 30 seconds whilst we exit the boat ; or have the boat text my mobile phone when I am away if the bilge pump activates. I particularly like the idea of sending a mobile text to the boat to switch the central heating on an hour before I arrive so that it is warm when I enter the boat
Having committed to building the boat in February with a fit-out slot planned for early September (following the arrival of a classic Tim Tyler shell) I was desperate to spend the Christmas and New Year period on the boat with the family including my sister, brother in law and nephew Ross ; the race was on to have the boat completed on time ; we were spending new years eve and the maiden voyage on “Sir James” – named after my son James (Who still unfortunately wishes I had bought a speed boat !)
